How Do I Stop My Dog Getting Matted

One of the biggest shocks for dog owners is hearing their dog needs to be shaved when only a few weeks earlier the coat still looked fluffy and manageable.

From the owner’s side, it can feel like the matting appeared overnight.

From the groomer’s side, we usually know it’s been building quietly underneath the coat for much longer.

That’s because matting rarely starts on the surface.

It starts deep underneath the top layer, close to the skin, where moisture, friction, movement, and loose undercoat begin compacting together little by little every day.

The tricky part is that many dogs still look perfectly fluffy on the outside while this is happening underneath.

That’s why owners are often genuinely shocked when we separate the coat and show them what’s hidden underneath the surface.

Why Doodle Coats Are So Deceptive

One of the biggest coat misconceptions right now comes from doodle and oodle breeds.

Cavoodles, Groodles, Moodle mixes, and similar coats are extremely popular because owners love the soft fluffy teddy-bear look.

But these coats are also some of the easiest coats to mat severely.

The reason is the coat texture itself.

Soft curly coats constantly trap:

  • loose hair

  • moisture

  • sand

  • dirt

  • undercoat

  • friction

and once that starts twisting together underneath, the coat begins tightening very quickly.

Many owners run a brush over the top and think the coat feels soft.

Meanwhile underneath, the coat is already compacting against the skin.

The Sunshine Coast Lifestyle Makes It Worse

The Sunshine Coast environment speeds matting up dramatically.

Dogs here live amazing outdoor lives:

  • beach walks

  • swimming

  • humidity

  • sand

  • harnesses

  • rain

  • natural drying

  • rolling around outdoors

But all of those things affect coat condition.

Saltwater and moisture are especially difficult because once the coat dries naturally, the hair tightens and binds together much faster.

Harnesses also create constant friction in the same areas every day:

  • chest

  • armpits

  • shoulders

These are some of the worst matting areas we see in the salon.

The Areas Owners Usually Miss

Most severe matting is not evenly spread across the body.

It usually develops first in hidden areas:

  • behind the ears

  • under the collar

  • under the harness

  • armpits

  • tail area

  • inside the legs

These are the spots where:

  • friction

  • moisture

  • compression

  • movement

are strongest.

And because owners naturally brush the visible top layer first, these hidden areas are often missed until the matting becomes severe.

Why Some Dogs Suddenly Stop Tolerating Brushing

This is something many owners misunderstand.

When matting starts forming underneath the coat, brushing no longer feels like simple brushing to the dog.

It starts pulling directly on tight areas close to the skin.

That discomfort changes the dog’s behaviour.

Suddenly:

  • they move away

  • cry

  • bite the brush

  • hide

  • resist handling

Owners often think the dog is becoming naughty or stubborn, but many times the dog is simply reacting to discomfort.

What Groomers Actually See

One thing most owners never see is how matting physically changes the coat structure underneath.

Severe matting can:

  • tighten like felt

  • trap moisture against the skin

  • hide skin irritation

  • hold dirt and debris

  • restrict airflow

  • pull every time the dog moves

In some cases, matting becomes so tight that dogs can no longer move comfortably in certain areas.

That’s why groomers take matting seriously long before owners realise how advanced it has become.

The Biggest Thing Owners Can Do

The biggest mistake is waiting until the coat visibly looks bad.

By the time matting becomes obvious on the outside, it’s usually already much worse underneath.

The best prevention is regular brushing with the right type of brush, drying all the way through after wash at home and coat checks underneath the surface, especially:

  • after swimming

  • during humid weather

  • around harness areas

  • behind the ears

  • after outdoor activity

Because once severe matting develops, fixing it becomes much harder than preventing it in the first place.
